    One Size Fits All

Whenever you see a garment bearing the legend ‘One size fits all’, you can generally interpret it as ‘One size fits no-one’. The Majority Homerton 2 is, however, the audio device that proves the rule. Virtually all possible audio options are packed into this compact and attractive piece of equipment and they are carried out in an exemplary manner.

On opening the box, I was pleased to find that the Homerton 2 is a solid and good-looking device that will not appear out of place in any setting. When not in use for one of its many functions, it displays an analogue clock-face that can be dimmed. I find this most helpful at night as mine is used in the bedroom.

It is controlled by knobs and push-buttons on the front face or by a responsive remote-control and I had no problems setting it up, being able to connect it to my Wi-Fi network without even having to look up my password. No instruction-manual is included, and while the function of each button can be found online, I would have preferred a printed version.

The radio receives broadcasts in one of three ways. It has an extendible aerial for receiving FM and DAB+ stations but unfortunately, where I live the signals are very weak and it struggles to pick up more than a handful of FM stations under these adverse conditions. It does better with DAB+, the auto-tuner detecting 32 stations (though sadly, not Classic FM).

None of this concerns me too much, however, as I shall mainly use the internet radio which will allow me to listen to thousands of radio stations from around the world and all in the highest quality sound. I have already stored 20 of the possible 40 for easy access and can now tune in to my favourite easy-listening station, Serenade, which can only be found online. Podcasts can be similarly accessed, and this will open a new world to me as I have not used this service before.

I find the sleep function, which can be set to turn the radio (or another player) off after various time intervals, particularly useful as I can ensure that the set will not play all night after I have drifted off into the land of nod.

I have only a free Spotify account but have no difficulty in playing my latest playlist without even having to open Spotify on my tablet. the device by which I normally access it. I also find being able to listen to music stored on a memory stick via the USB port on the rear of the appliance very useful.

As I have a large CD collection, a big plus for me is the built-in CD player. When this is selected, the disc simply slides into the player and starts playing. The tracks may be programmed to play in a specific order or randomised if desired, though I shall not use this function much as I often listen to symphonies, etc where the order of playing is that on the disc.

The Homerton 2 delivers excellent sound for both music and speech and this can be tweaked to taste using the built-in sound-equaliser. Of course, this is not top-end Hi-Fi (which would cost many times the price), but it is very high quality. I therefore have no hesitation in highly recommending this versatile piece of equipment.

Compact music system that packs lots of punch

Where did you buy your product? Amazon

I was in the market for a portable music system that would be future proof in terms of connectivity and enable me to listen to FM and digital radio, have bluetooth connectivity and a CD player.
After unpacking, I really appreciated that the manual is online and is not printed as part of the package as that’s usually the first thing I throw away.
First thing I noticed was that this device is fairly compact however this is just a disguise. It actually packs a lot of punch. I have ordered a version with a bright wooden finish and I’m using it in the kitchen and living room where it fits well.
Quality of sound is outstanding and on par with other major brands. Sound is balanced and crystal clear considering the size of this compact system. I get good reception for DAB and FM across my house without any need of moving.
Navigation through the menu takes a short time to get used to, however it’s intuitive enough and usually I guessed right on first attempt the right button to push. Must say I’m not having trouble anymore as I have checked all modes – FM, DAB, bluetooth, podcasts, CD and all worked as expected.
Internet connectivity – what makes this system special is that it allows you to connect to wifi (to support internet radio) but also to get new firmware updates. I’m looking forward to getting some improvements over time on the software side.
As I’m quite conscious of power consumption I have noticed this device uses in comparison low amounts of electricity – only about 3-5 W in FM Radio mode.
I’ve been using this system for a couple of weeks now and I was able to use all the functionality without any troubles.
At the end of the day I got what I expected, a well rounded, compact music system that can fill the room with tunes, with crystal sound and good level of future proofing.
